What you’ve always suspected is true – negative people are draining and positive people energise those around them. Recent studies have shown that:
- People who interact with positive people perform better
- The position of someone in an organisation’s energy network is 4 x more important than their position in information or influence networks in terms of predicting performance
- High performing organisations have 3 x the positive energising networks as low performing organisations and that is just for line staff. It gets worse when you consider the multiplying effect of leaders on their staff.
Research (Owen, Baker & Cameron, 2012) found that positive energy leaders enhance the life of the individuals they lead by increasing:
- Job satisfaction
Even the lives of the families of the individuals they led were improved!
The effects on their teams was also marked by improved:
- Team learning orientation
Here’s the big ones leaders – leaders who spend more time with their strongest performers (as opposed to weakest) achieved double the productivity. If you wanted to be more productive – don’t spend most of your time with your weakest performer but with your strongest. It’s kind of the opposite of what we’ve been taught.
