The one thing that makes people feel valued (And it’s not money)

The most precious gift you can give to someone these days is attention. It’s at the heart of:

●  Good communication

●  Love – who you want to give your time to (ie people close to you)

●  Performance management

Every time I wake up in this busy world it becomes more apparent to me that the most precious gift you can give someone is your attention.

Being seen and heard is the real reward.

How do you know this to be true?

Many years ago I was working on a project in Nicaragua. I’d been doing some work in a radio station which did not seem to be all that useful. Disappointed, I took off south and met a couple of aid workers helping locals with their farms.

One Saturday afternoon we headed off to a nearby village with our hoes.  We were going to help establish a vegetable garden in the middle of the village.

We got there and began digging the ground and planting.  Everyone joined in, there was a music and food – it was quite a fun atmosphere.

But I was also a bit perplexed - they were already farmers, why did they need us to help them establish a vegetable garden?

What did the leader of our aid project bring that they didn’t already have?

Nothing – unless you think attention matters, which it does.

Attention = Value

Giving your attention shows what you value.

Have you tried getting attention from your telephone provider? From an agency? From a utility organisation or a big corporation?

How does it feel when you don’t get it?  Do you feel un-valued?

What is valuable to you?  Are you giving it your attention?

What are you giving your attention to that is not valuable?
